In 2022, almost 90 percent of high school students in Italy learned English. In fact, English is the most studied language in Italian schools and the only mandatory one for all curricula at any level of education. As far as second foreign languages, 20 percent of students studied French, while 14 percent chose Spanish. Additionally, German was the fourth most common foreign language in Italian high schools. A small share of students studied Chinese and Russian.
